Excess wear and use

Rush hour traffic, shopping carts, baseball games - wear and tear can come from anywhere. But don’t worry, normal wear and use is expected on every leased vehicle. To help you understand the difference, you may schedule a complimentary vehicle inspection with our vendor or review your vehicle on your own. 

Complimentary vehicle inspection ^

Between 45 and 60 days before your lease ends, AutoVIN, our authorized inspection service provider, will schedule and conduct a complimentary and comprehensive vehicle inspection. Or you can schedule your inspection online with AutoVIN or by calling them at 1-800-556-2811.  You'll need to have your VIN and Southeast Toyota Finance account number on hand for scheduling.

  • Final odometer reading at or below your contractual obligations

Excess wear & use

  • Final odometer reading above your contractual obligations

Dings and dents

Normal wear & use

  • Smaller than or equal to one inch in diameter 
  • Six or fewer dings and dents per panel

Excess wear & use

  • Larger than one inch in diameter
  • Seven or more dings and dents per panel


Normal wear & use

  • Scratches in cloth or leather interior
  • Minimal stains that can easily be removed

Excess wear & use

  • Tears, burns or singes in cloth or leather
  • Heavy stains that cannot be removed


Normal wear & use

  • Paint chips or scratches less than or equal to two inches in length
  • Ten or fewer paint chips

Excess wear & use

  • Paint chips or scratches greater than 2 inches in length 
  • Eleven or more paint chips


Normal wear & use

  • Repairable damage, such as chip, star, or light scratch that is less than ½” in diameter or length
  • Three or fewer pits or scratches in the windshield

  • Replacement or non-repairable damage, such as chip, star or crack greater than ½” in diameter or length 
  • Four or more pits or scratches in the windshield

  • Scratched wheel covers

  • Missing wheel covers, jack and/or wheel wrench
  • Bent, cracked, broken wheel cover and/or center cap
  • Any gouges and/or abrasions equal to or greater than one inch
  • Oxidized aluminum alloy wheel, greater than 50%


Normal wear & use

  • Tread depth of 1/8 of an inch or greater

Excess wear & use

  • Tread depth less than 1/8 of an inch 
  • Tires that are the wrong size or speed rating
  • Cut, torn or plugged sidewalls
  • Missing spare tire, jack and/or tool kit (if applicable)


Normal wear & use

  • Frame is not or has never been damaged

Excess wear & use

  • Damaged or previously damaged frame


Normal wear & use

  • No modifications other than Toyota approved accessories

Excess wear & use

  • Any modifications, such as suspension, vehicle color or paint schemes, lettering or graphics, holes in frames, post delivery customizing, powertrain or fuel system alterations, non-OEM or dealer installed tinted glass, or substandard repair

  • No damage to the truck bed, top rails or tailgate

Excess wear & use

  • Damage to the truck bed, top rails and/or tailgate
  • Missing tailgate
Other examples of excess wear and use include, but are not limited to: missing, inoperable or cracked headlights, tail lights, turn signals, rearview or outside mirrors; missing or inoperable seat belts or SRS - air bag; missing headrests or seats (including the 3rd row in an SUV); engine damage or inoperable vehicle; missing audio equipment; and any other damage that would cost $50 or more to repair, regardless if it is covered by insurance.

End-of-term payments

We will mail you a final invoice that will include any charges for excess wear and use, excess mileage, past due payments and any other unpaid charges such as disposition fee and property tax. You can expect to receive the invoice within two to three weeks after we are notified that you returned your leased Toyota. Please refer to your lease agreement for complete details.
