Driven to Care
Our 13-year partnership with North Fulton Community Charities
September 2021

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, North Fulton Community Charities faced a whole new set of challenges.

Since 1983, the organization has been helping North Georgia families with food, money, clothing and free workforce readiness courses. But the economic and social effects of the pandemic created a need unlike anything the organization had ever seen, with more than 1,500 families asking for help with paying the rent.

That’s when Southeast Toyota Finance’s parent company, JM Family Enterprises, stepped in.

“JM Family was one of the first companies who said, ‘We want to make sure you are stabilized,’ and supported us with financial assistance,” said Holly York, NFCC’s Executive Director. In April 2020, the company gave a $10,000 emergency donation to support the organizations’ emergency needs during COVID-19.

But that was far from the first time JM Family had partnered with NFCC. Since 2008, associates at DataScan, a subsidiary of JM Family in Georgia, have pitched in to help the organization. As part of our company’s ongoing dedication to supporting local nonprofits, they have dedicated more than 500 volunteer hours to NFCC to date.

“NFCC is here to support those underserved people – people that are maybe less privileged than many of us,” said Matt Powell, DataScan’s Vice President of Business Development. Powell also serves on the organization’s board of directors.

More than 30,000 people live under the poverty line in north Fulton County, and NFCC helps more than 4,000 families a year. Over the years, DataScan associates have pitched in by holding drives to collect canned food, warm socks, toys, school supplies and more. Associates also volunteer at the NFCC Thrift Shop in special events to help sort clothing. In 2019, DataScan was named the North Fulton Community Charities Business Partner of the Year.

Since 2008, JM Family and DataScan have donated more than $130,000 to NFCC. In 2018, NFCC was one recipient of our company’s 50th anniversary gift, where JM Family donated $50,000 to six nonprofit organizations.

More recently, the company gave $24,000 to help complete the organization’s three-year, $6.2 million capital campaign. With the campaign money, NFCC built a new service center that was completed in April 2021. It also expanded the thrift shop and food pantry in late 2020.

COVID-19 was difficult for the organization, which relies on in-person interactions to change lives, York said. But they adapted for their community. For example, NFCC’s food bank is one of the few that lets people choose what they want to eat. During the pandemic, families could fill out an online form and pick up what they needed contact-free.
Since 2008, associates at DataScan, a subsidiary of JM Family in Georgia, have pitched in to help the organization.
“Families who are in crisis don’t know where to turn, and we have made it easier for them to get assistance,” York said.

While donations have ramped up, the need continues, York said. Anyone in North Georgia can help by donating food, clothing and funds or volunteering in the thrift shop, food pantry, intake desk, general office and education center.
