These days, purchasing a vehicle that will retain its value is more important than ever.
The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted production across the globe, inflating the prices of many items — including vehicles, notes Kelley Blue Book (KBB.com), an automotive research company. At the end of 2022, the average cost of a new vehicle reached a record high of nearly $50,000.
To help save money down the road, buyers should consider what their vehicle will be worth in a few years, says KBB.com. And there’s no better value-retaining brand than Toyota, which won KBB.com’s Best Resale Value brand award for 2023. This year marks its sixth time earning the award and its third consecutive year wearing the crown.
An average 2023 model-year vehicle (any brand) will only retain about 45% of its value after five years. But KBB.com’s picks are estimated to retain more — even up to 73%, depending on the model.
KBB.com also went beyond naming the top brand. It selected specific vehicles in different categories to win Best Resale Value awards. Let’s see which Toyotas made the cut and how much value they will retain.
2023 Toyota Tundra
Distinctions: No. 1 on Best Resale Value Top 10 list and Best Resale Value award for Full-Size Pickup Truck
KBB.com’s estimated 5-year resale value: 73.3%
If you want value, cast no further than the 2023 Toyota Tundra. KBB.com estimates this vehicle will retain a stunning 73.3% of its value after five years. That’s the highest percentage across all 2023 brands and models, dubbing the Tundra No. 1 on Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Top 10 list and top of its own Full-Size Pickup Truck category.
The Tundra was redesigned in 2022, featuring an award-winning hybrid engine option called the i-FORCE MAX. Thanks to its electric motor’s instant response time, this engine serves up 437 horsepower. With Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 and truck-specific camera systems, the Tundra also knows how to protect your passengers. That’s why it won two 2023 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards — the institute’s highest honor.

2023 Toyota Tacoma
Distinctions: No. 2 on Best Resale Value Top 10 list and Best Resale Value award for Midsize Pickup Truck
KBB.com’s estimated 5-year resale value: 65.8%
Right behind the Tundra is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma, which landed No. 2 on the KBB.com Best Resale Value Top 10 List. It’s also the leader of its Midsize Pickup Truck category, with a 5-year resale value of 65.8%.
Value retention isn’t the only reason Kelley Blue Book likes the Tacoma. It was also named the company’s Midsize Truck Best Buy of 2023 for its wide array of options, advanced safety technologies, and “highly capable” off-road abilities. The 2023 Toyota Tacoma adds two new appearance packages to the mix, allowing for style alongside function. And several trims like the SR V6 and Limited now feature new options, like automatic dual-zone control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and Smart Key.

2023 Toyota Sienna
Distinction: Best Resale Value award for Minivan
KBB.com’s estimated 5-year resale value: 59.3%
The Sienna isn’t just a minivan, KBB.com says. It’s a minivan with “class-leading value and an established reputation for reliability,” which makes it the best value-retaining minivan on the market*. The 2023 Sienna’s estimated 5-year resale value is 59.3%.
The Sienna won’t just help your pocket upon resell — it’ll also help you save money while you own it. As of 2021, all Siennas are hybrid only, offering an estimated 36 miles per gallon and 245 horsepower. Most minivans average only 22 miles per gallon! 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime
Distinction: Best Resale Value award for Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid
KBB.com’s estimated 5-year resale value: 56%
When it comes to hybrids and electric vehicles, the RAV4 Prime hits a sweet spot. You can fill it with gas and drive it like a normal hybrid, or plug it in for electric-only drives. This versatility is why it has a resale value of 56% after five years, KBB.com says — the best in its category.
2023’s two RAV4 Prime trims boast an incredible 94 MPGe, or miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent. They can drive 42 miles on electricity only when fully charged, making them perfect for jaunts around town. And each has attractive style and functionality packages, too — like the Prime XSE’s Premium Package, which includes a panoramic glass roof that doubles as a power moonroof, a 10-inch color Head Up Display, and more.
